Title: Reidhead Brothers Lumber Mills Inc.
Type: Biomass utilization
Jurisdiction: City/town
State: Arizona
Program Description: Background

Reidhead Brothers Lumber Mills, Inc., located in Nutrioso, Arizona, is a third-generation, family-owned operation with markets established for a variety of wood products. Facilities include a remanufacturing plant in Springerville, Arizona, a large-diameter sawmill in Nutrioso, and a molding plant in Snowflake, Arizona. The company is currently expanding to include small diameter log processing.

Small-diameter lumber processing facility

The small-diameter log processing venture began with Terry Reidheads 2004 purchase of an existing sawmill near Eagar, Arizona, along with a lease of land from the city of Eagar for operations. The mill has been retrofitted and upgraded with the addition of new equipment. The design is based on a 4-inch-wide bandsaw scragg mill, a modified bull edger, and a trim saw. A bucking saw and debarker are included in the log factory and an existing 7-foot bandmill has been retained to be used should larger grade logs become available.

The facility also has a planer mill with a breakdown hoist, planer matcher, and a certified truck scale. The planer mill has been running since August 2005, and the small-diameter mill is scheduled to be running some time in 2006. A wood chipper was also recently added. Chips are currently being sold to Forest Energy Corporation, a wood pellet manufacturing plant located about 60 miles from the mill.

The sawmill presently receives all of its supply from the White Mountain Stewardship Contract. When in full operation, the mill is expected to produce 12 million board feet of lumber per year and employ 15 people.

Dry kiln addition

In 2005, American West Structures received a National Woody Biomass Utilization Grant from the USDA Forest Service to secure increased capacity to dry lumber to 8% moisture content. Rather than build their own dry kiln, American West Structures is helping fund a dry kiln at Reidhead Brothers small-diameter sawmill, which is located nearby. In a win/win partnering of the two companies, American West Structures could become Reidheads largest customer for small-diameter lumber once the volume of lumber dried to the required moisture content is available; and American West Structures will be able to increase their small-diameter lumber supply from 20% to 35% while increasing payments to Reidhead Brothers Sawmill by $20 per thousand board feet. In turn, Reidhead will able to pay $3 more per ton for the raw material from Future Forests, LLC, the general contractor for the White Mountain Stewardship Contract. Reidhead hopes to have the dry kiln in full operation by spring 2006.
