The national database of state and local wildfire hazard mitigation programs serves as a clearinghouse of information about nonfederal policies and programs that seek to reduce the risk of loss of life and property through the reduction of hazardous fuels on private lands. If you would like to submit a program to the national wildfire programs database, please complete the following form (MS Word).

Program Description: Oregon Wildfire Risk Explorer

The Oregon Wildfire Risk Explorer, (http://oregonexplorer.info/Wildfire), is an interactive, web-based information portal that allows users to access the Geographic Information System (GIS) data used to develop Oregon's 2006 Statewide Communities at Risk from Wildfire Assessment. The site also contains information to help Oregon communities refine and implement Community Wildfire Protection Plans, and to help Oregon citizens learn about and reduce wildfire risks to their properties. The Oregon Wildfire Risk Explorer is a joint effort between Oregon Department of Forestry, the Institute for Natural Resources at Oregon State University and the Oregon State University Libraries.

Oregon Communities at Risk for Wildfire

In 2006, Oregon completed its initial statewide Communities at Risk Assessment and list which assigns each Oregon community a low, moderate, or high risk rating for the likelihood of a wildfire occurring. Most counties in Oregon have completed their Community Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPP). CWPPs in Oregon are being done on both a county and community level. The CWPPs define the community boundaries and Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) areas, describe local wildfire hazards and values at risk, and explain how the community or county will reduce risk and respond in the event of a wildfire. GIS information contained in multiple data layers were used for the Oregon Communities at Risk Assessment and the CWPPs.

Maps, Charts, Tables and Data Collections

Using the Mapping Tool, users can search for a location by place name or watershed, they can view different map layers including the community at risk boundary, wildland urban interface boundary, and locations of cities, counties and lakes. There is a Basic Mapping Tool and an Advanced Mapping Tool, and a link to Google Earth to view wildfire risk ratings over Google Earth imagery. The Statewide Community at Risk Data includes the classified forestland-urban interface as defined by the Oregon Forestland-Urban Interface Fire Protection Act, community at risk boundaries, local state and federal fire occurence, ODF protection districts and rural fire protection districts. The Statewide Community at Risk data is available at the Oregon Geospatial Data Clearinghouse.

Homeowner Resources

A section on reducing wildfire risk provides homeowners with information on home protection guidelines, firesafe landscaping and firesafe construction.

Homeowners can search the wildfire risk in their area by community name, zip code, or by 4th, 5th or 6th field watershed.
