The national database of state and local wildfire hazard mitigation programs serves as a clearinghouse of information about nonfederal policies and programs that seek to reduce the risk of loss of life and property through the reduction of hazardous fuels on private lands. If you would like to submit a program to the national wildfire programs database, please complete the following form (MS Word).

Title: Prescott, AZ -- Fire Department regulations for new developments
Type: Regulatory
Designation of high risk areas
Jurisdiction: Fire District
State: Arizona
Program Description: Prescott Fire Department development regulations apply to "neighborhoods at risk" as identified in the fire department's fire hazard assessment. The fire hazard assessment, conducted by the fire department, delineates high hazard vegetation zones. Developers of new subdivisions within high hazard zones are required to provide a fire protection plan to address specific conditions in the area to be developed. The plans are approved on an individual basis by the Fire Chief; for example: "Structural Safeguard Standards and Vegetation Management Plan for Stonegate Subdivision" which is summarized below.

Zone 1. (0' to 10' from buildings and decks)

  1. Removal of native brush, leaving only the best specimens.
  2. Trim pine trees to height above roofline.
  3. Remove all junipers.
  4. Remove all dead material.
  5. Remove all brush and grass from under docks.

Zone 2. )10' to 30' from buildings and decks)

  1. Remove ladder fuels. Distance of lowest tree branch minimum of 3 times the brush height. Trim limbs to at least 6' from the ground.
  2. Thin brush so you can walk between it. Emphasis will be placed on downhill slopes greater than 20% where additional vegetation treatment may be needed.
  3. Where brush is greater the 5' tall, create clear space, twice the height of the brush in width. The brush will create an island for wildlife.
  4. Remove all but 1" of the last pine needle drop. It is important to leave 1" of the new and decomposing layer of needles to build healthy soil.

Zone 3. (30' to 150' from buildings and decks)

  1. Remove all ladder fuels and deal material.
  2. Defensible space in Zones 1 and 3 should be maintained annually.
